Youth IGF Nepal, in collaboration with other esteemed members of the Digital Freedom Coalition, has issued a press statement expressing deep concern over the recent governmental intent to impose bans on social media platforms. This move, announced by the Minister for Communication and Information Technology, threatens to undermine Nepal’s constitutional and international obligations by giving networks a seven-day ultimatum without adequate transparency or public consultation.
The Digital Freedom Coalition, which includes 11 civil society organizations dedicated to safeguarding digital rights and freedoms in Nepal, highlights the critical role social media platforms play in fostering free speech, enabling democratic rights, and driving the digital economy. The coalition warns that restrictive measures on social media could have far-reaching consequences, including shrinking the space for freedom of expression, stifling democratic practices, and jeopardizing the sustainability of media outlets.
Key Points from the Press Statement:
- Impact on Digital Freedoms: The proposed bans lack transparency and public consultation, raising alarms about arbitrary decision-making that could severely impact digital freedoms.
- Economic Consequences: Blocking social media platforms would disrupt businesses of all sizes, leading to significant job losses in sectors such as digital marketing, content creation, and online commerce.
- Democratic Values: Restrictive measures threaten democratic values, civic engagement, and the exercise of fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and association.
The coalition calls on all stakeholders to prioritize the protection of these rights and work collaboratively to create a legal framework that fosters a free, open, and inclusive digital environment. The statement urges the government, platform owners, and all concerned parties to uphold transparency, respect national and international laws, and ensure that any legal framework governing social media is developed through inclusive consultations.
